  • Go to 'MyINL'.
  • Create a registration file; you will be given access codes (username and password).
  • Pay the administrative charge of 10 €, either:
    • by bank/credit card (secure payment), or
    • by bank payment or transfer (print out the payment advice note that shows up in your personal space).
The administrative charge is payable per academic year, per learner and per language. The amount is non-refundable and must be paid within three working days following the application.
  • Once you have paid, go to your personal space on 'MyINL', click on 'New Registrations', and make an appointment.
  • Print the confirmation of your appointment for an orientation interview.
Orientation day:
  • Confirmation of your appointment, which you can print from your personal page (welcome and registration form).
Registration days:
  • If applicable, the document that allows you to apply for a reduced rate.
You will take a language test. This test is based on the CEFR >.
  • For English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese French and German, you can do an online test once you have paid your registration fee.
  • For Luxembourgish and Chinese, you will do your test at the INL during the registration days.
During an individual interview of about 15 minutes, you will talk with a teacher in order to determine which course is most appropriate for your needs and abilities.
Validation of your registration is complete once you have paid for the course. After your interview and once you have registered for a course, you have three working days in which to pay :
  • either by credit card (secure payment) via your personal space,
  • or by bank transfer/payment. You must send proof of payment by e-mail ( or either to the reception office before the deatline.
  • 250€ for a course of 5 classes a week (5 x 1hr 40mins)
  • 230€ for a course of 4 classes a week (4 x 1hr 40mins)
  • 170€ for a course of 3 classes a week (3 x 1hr 40mins)
  • 135€ for a course of 2 classes a week (2 x 1hr 40mins)
  • 100€ for a course of 1 class a week (1 x 1hr 40mins)
The people listed below pay a reduced course fee, equivalent to the administrative charge:
  • jobseekers receiving benefit, on presentation of a convocation drawn up by the Employment Administration;
  • people receiving the guaranteed minimum income who are eligible for an additional social measure under the (amended) Law of 26 July 1986 creating, inter alia, entitlement to a guaranteed minimum income, on presentation of an attestation drawn up in the beneficiary's name by the National Service for Social Action (Service National d'Action Sociale);
  • people who are recognised as being needy, on presentation of an attestation drawn up in the beneficiary's name, by the Luxembourg Reception and Integration Agency (Office Luxembourgeois de l'Accueil et de l'Intégration - OLAI) or municipal social welfare offices;
  • civil servants and State employees and persons in a similar position, on condition that the course is organised specially for them at the specific request of the head of the service or administration in which the persons concerned are employed;
  • pupils in post-primary education on the basis of a duly justified letter of recommendation from the head of the post-primary school attended by the pupil.
The reduced course fee is only granted if the documents mentioned are presented at the time of registering. Unless the Director of the INL expressly permits it, a reduced rate can only be granted to follow one course per semester and only in one of the three administrative languages of the country, or English. If you are to benefit from the reduced rate, your monthly attendance must be at least 80%. If your attendance is less than 80% per month, you will have to pay the full course fee. Refusal to pay will result in immediate exclusion from the class.

The reduced rate only applies:

  • for English, French, German and Luxembourgish courses, and
  • for courses between 8 a.m. and 12 noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Anyone who wishes to apply for Luxembourgish nationality and is required to take the language tests.
You may register in person at the INL or by post.
The cost of registration, laid down by Grand-Ducal Regulation, is 75 €.

Since September 2015, the 'Sproochentest' is held in two places:

The certificate is valid for a period of two years from the date shown on the certificate.
There is no limit to the number of times. However, you can only register again once the results of the previous test have been obtained.
A candidate who withdraws for no valid reason or does not show up for the test will not receive a refund, and will have to re-register.
The 'Sproochentest' is the only recognised certification for applying to obtain Luxembourgish nationality. Success in the test of linguistic knowledge of Luxembourgish organised by the State (prior to a civil servant taking up a post) does not exempt a candidate for naturalisation from taking the 'Sproochentest'.

The teacher will tell you at the beginning of the course what material and/or textbook you will need. You will also have to bring a pen and paper, and possibly a file or folder for photocopies and/or documents handed out in class.
Asylum-seekers can obtain textbooks free of charge. Teachers are given a list of eligible students, and the books are ordered for them.
The INL considers your choice to be definitive as soon as the payment has been received, so it is important that you double-check if the time and days of the course you have chosen doesn't conflict with other obligations that you might have. Course changes are not possible, except under the following circumstances:   

1.    Timetable changes are not possible, except under these circumstances :
  • A timetable change is possible if you are enrolled in more than one language at the INL and if the times of these courses are overlapping.
  • A time change is possible if your working hours change during the semester (please send a written application together with a written proof of your new working hours to ).
  2.    Level changes during the first session of a semester (between the beginning of the semester and the first school holidays) :
  • Level changes are possible if a difference between the level you were put in during your enrollment and the  level of the other persons in the class is evident.
  • Such changes can only be made during the first session of a semester.
  • The application for such a change has to be made by your teacher and validated by the head of department
You will need to talk to your teacher, who will ask the administration to move you to a different class. You will be sent a personal confirmation.
Yes. Attendance is checked at each class. The records of attendance are computerised, and you may check them. You can print a certificate of attendance from your personal account via MyINL >.
People who are not registered for the language course are not allowed into the classroom, for legal and security reasons. They could also possibly disturb the class.
Your teacher is the best person to contact. If you have any administrative or organisational questions, you can contact reception, or the administration.
You can contact the coordinator of the department for the language you are learning. Office hours are posted on a board next to the coordinators' room. You will need to make an appointment; you have to do this on the Internet, using your personal account.
At the start of the semester, each student receives a learner's card. The card gives access to the media library/resource centre, and the canteen. It must be produced upon request.
In order to allow students to improve their communicative skills, there are two types of assessment that are used:
  • Formative assessment tracking learners' progress at every stage throughout the semester, and
  • Performance assessment in the form of end-of-semester tests.
At the INL, all learners taking end-of-semester tests or who have been assessed throughout the semester are entitled to a skills' assessment report. The report gives an idea of the skills acquired at a given Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) level >.
